  • ... in special moments

    I've noticed that days pass by and I get engrossed in what I'm doing and occasionally I get overwhelmed and realise that I've taken on the role of 'martyr'. These aren't productive moments and fortunately they don't last long. But inevitably they're dispelled much more quickly when something special happens;

  • ... in self esteem

    When our self-esteem is high, we sometimes think of ourselves as Superman or Wonder Woman! We can walk on water, scale tall buildings with a single jump, create opportunities for ourselves, respond to challenges. We have a purpose in life and we can move forward, always keeping that purpose at the front of our minds.

  • ... in parenthood

    As children grow up, many parents wonder what has happened to the easy communication that seemed to exist within the family when the children were younger. When their children were tiny they always seemed to be talking and asking questions. But for some reason this easy dialogue began to diminish. They wonder why.

  • ... in every sport

    Our thoughts count in every aspect of our lives, of course, but our limiting thoughts are somehow more noticeable when we're competing against others. Take sport for example. It's our thoughts that count! We only need to concentrate on our own performance, our own excellence.

  • ... in communication

    Too often, we communicate poorly and then blame the recipients of our message if their reaction is not what we expected. What would happen if we looked at ourselves instead, and considered what would have happened if we had used different words, a different tone of voice, or had chosen a better time, or medium, to communicate in the first place?

  • ... with a faithful friend

    Leaving Jessie behind for five months in 2008 was hard, particularly because of her age. It wasn't that she was really old but she had worked hard throughout her life. Still, I told myself, I'm leaving her with some very good friends whom she loves, and who understand about the needs of a farm dog.

  • ... in sport

    As human beings, we filter what we hear, see and feel. When our self-esteem is high, our filters may enhance what we hear, see and feel. When it's low, the reverse is true. These filters do three things. They distort, delete and generalise the 'truth' so that we believe the most outrageous things.

  • ... on holiday

    We often anticipate holidays with great excitement and, if you're anything like me, not a little stress! All the things I would normally be doing while I'm away still seem to need to be done - before I go. So I work myself to a frazzle, and stress everyone around me at the same time!

  • .... in your life

    Many people believe that there are things they can't do. And, of course, they're right - some of the time! But what a lot of people don't seem to realise is that their brain doesn't know what it can't do until they tell it. And we tell our brains all sorts of things that are really not helpful.
